Interview with Lyle Ashton Harris by Chuck Close
This catalogue accompanies the exhibition of the same name, on view at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum from June 6, 1999 to July 11, 1999. The exhibition was the first major public presentation of a selection of images from a series of unique Polaroid portraits by Lyle Ashton Harris. The subjects of this series - drawn from a broad range of acquaintances and friends - include the artist's Yoga teacher, a patron, a friend's three-year-old child, and a variety of personalities from the worlds of art and fashion. Lyle Ashton Harris (born 1965, New York) has cultivated a diverse artistic practice ranging from photographic media, collage, installation and performance. His work explores intersections between the personal and the political, examining the impact of ethnicity, gender and desire on the contemporary social and cultural dynamic.
